可能是由于画家生活无忧,因此他很少为钱创作。他只为艺术家、朋友和家人创作。他曾经如此评说,“我恨为陌生的人画肖像,特别是拿着钱来交换的人。我不在乎钱。(I would hate to paint portraits, in the sense of painting strange people who come and commission their portrait. I don’t care for that.)”

在早期,Vihelm让他的妹妹Anna和母亲Frederikke担任模特。但在1890年左右,他的注意力转向自己的未婚妻Ida。在画家的生涯中,Ida不仅有多幅肖像,而且画家雇佣Ida作为他的领衔模特。Vihelm的最成功作品就是一个只看到背影的女人,画家从来没有让人知道她是谁。Ida担任画家的模特70多次,或站,或坐,在他们居室的一个房间。画家的住房是一栋建于17世纪,位于哥本哈根港口的老房子。当然,后人的疑问很多,Ida是被劳役、拘役,还是夫妻情深,估计没有人能够解答这个问题。

尽管Vihelm终生生活在哥本哈根,但是经常到海外旅游,特别是英国伦敦。画家非常喜欢选择一个阴天,在漂亮的宫殿和教堂中作画。这些大作中,大多以都市景观为主,很少有人物出现,人们称之为“安静的城市(The Silent City)”。

在艺术生涯,Vihelm当然是成功的,尽管他在1916年就早逝。艺术家Sophus Claussen在1916特作诗来纪念Vihelm。诗作内容如下:
