Bill Blair: Harper’s failed marijuana policies are putting more young people at risk while enriching criminal gangs
When it comes to keeping marijuana away from our young people, Stephen Harper does not get it. Harper’s approach, including increased mandatory minimum sentences, has led to one result: according to a 2013 UNICEF report, Canadian teens lead the developed world in cannabis use.
Meanwhile, organized criminal gangs are raking in millions of dollars selling marijuana, and making our streets, schoolyards, and neighbourhoods less safe. On top of that, Harper’s mandatory minimum laws are being struck down.
“The Harper Conservatives refuse to create policy based on evidence, and instead rely on ideology,” said Liberal candidate for Scarborough Southwest, Bill Blair. “They choose to ignore the facts, and press on with an approach that’s failing our teenagers and our communities, making it easier for young people to access drugs that can adversely affect them.”
“The Liberals are the only party proposing a fresh and responsible approach on how we deal with marijuana. Instead of leaving it in the hands of organized crime, we will – in collaboration with the provinces and territories – strictly regulate marijuana the way we do for alcohol,” said Mr. Blair. “This will ensure that its sale is controlled, and that teenagers do not have access to it. That’s the only way we can ensure the safety of our communities, and lower drug use among young people.”
Even prominent Conservatives disagree with Harper. Conservative MP Scott Reid thinks marijuana should be legal (Huffington Post, September 29, 2015).
