Jeff Watson, Member of Parliament for Essex (Ontario), on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, will welcome visitors to Fort Malden National Historic Site as it opens for the season on May 16 at 10 a.m.

Following a two year closure, the site’s Interpretation Centre, otherwise known as Hough House, is now open. Be sure to discover its fascinating collection of artefacts from the War of 1812 and Rebellion of 1837-38.

This season, Parks Canada will be offering a number of interesting activities at Fort Malden sure to please any audience. Have you ever witnessed the thrill of a live musket demonstration or a cannon firing? Come to the fort and see this and much more including captivating garden tours, guided walks and savory cookhouse demonstrations. Bring the kids as they’ll love our hands-on activities.

With a seasonal pass enjoy entry into our special events including: the Great War Encampment, Military Heritage Days and the Garrison Christmas. Quick Facts
Constructed in 1796 as Fort Amherstburg near the mouth of the Detroit River, the site was the headquarters for British forces in southwestern Upper Canada during the War of 1812.  Fort Malden was erected after the war and reinforced in 1838-40 after it served once again as a centre for the British defence during the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837-38.  Today, Fort Malden preserves elements of the second fort built by the British on the eastern bank of the Detroit River to defend the Canadian border from American attack in the first half of the 19th century.

May 16 – June 30 Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
July 1 – September 6 Open daily, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
September 7 – October 10 Open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
