Gemini-nominated singer-songwriter Lily Frost and JUNO Award-winning U.K./U.S. performer/producer Slakah the Beatchild were dreaming big when they came together to create DREAMSPEED, their new four-song EP. Frost had no idea that when she walked into Madhaus coffee shop in Toronto one day, she would be meeting her brilliant future musical partner. They had immediate rapport and decided to take a stab at writing a song together.
The chemistry is undeniable on DREAMSPEED – the project where hip-hop meets tango, swing meets big beat, and pop worlds collide. Produced by Slakah and co-written and performed by Lily Frost and Slakah, the collaborative project creates a stunning and innovative sound.
Well known from song placements in commercials and TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Charmed, Mistresses, Crazy Beautiful and Being Erica, Frost has earned a place in the elite of Canada’s music scene. DREAMSPEED, however, marks a distinct break from her earlier work – such as 2008’s Lily Swings, which featured classic swing renditions of Billie Holidays songs, or her 12 original albums to date. This new collection of songs combines infectious rhythms, captivating original lyrics and shines a new light on Frost’s familiar vocal style. Slakah – who has released eight albums and has had production collaborations with and for Shad, Divine Brown, Drake and Justin Nozuka – really drives the songs, and provides her with a propulsive groove throughout. They make it sound casual and effortless but on closer listening, it’s clear they worked very hard to make everything sound perfectly in place.
The first already-released single “RoboTango” is a wake-up call about the urgent state of our current addiction to the internet, and showcases Lily’s sultry-but-sweet vocal riding Slakah’s true-to-the-tango melody, hip-hop beats and quirky instrumentation.
“Love Drunk” spirits you away on a tropical summer breeze of romantic bliss, heightened by Frost’s breathy Sade-like vocals. The lyrics are lushly intoxicating as per the title of the song, and the melody, mixed with Slakah’s machine-gun trap drumbeats, electro-groove and rap response to her call, are enhanced by the layering of horns reminiscent of those in the ‘60s hits by Burt Bacharach. The song whimsically evaporates at the end, floating into thin air.
“Settle” is a bouncy piano-pop tune about holding out for true love and the best in life. It features an easy, catchy singalong chorus with great harmonies, scratching supplied by Slakah – this time Frost raps in the middle – plus uniquely produced, beautiful strings that are almost unrecognizable.
We’re treated to more ear candy on the complex tune “Swing It,” a kind of motivational anthem with sexy vocals and harmonies, and a few tasty electric guitar licks at the end. It’s a jazzy, funky number that pulls swing into the 21st Century with up-to-the-minute production techniques. On the verses you can hear a descending four-note bass pattern à la “Crabbuckit” by K-OS, replete with Gene Krupa drums, while on the chorus it’s straight-up pop co-habitating with a ska/reggae foundational lilt.
DREAMSPEED may not inspire rapid eye movement in your sleep, but they’re sure to get you dancing, snapping your fingers, or singing along. Truly, they’re an eclectic, state-of the-art musical duo for 2016.
