The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band gets the Orchestral Treatment with the KWS and Toronto’s Art of Time Ensemble
The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony will present the iconic Beatles album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band with a little help from their friends, the Art of Time Ensemble, on January 22 & 23 at 8 pm at Centre In The Square. Led by KWS Assistant Conductor Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser and featuring the talents of some of Canada’s most recognizable voices, Steven Page (former member of Barenaked Ladies), Andy Maize (Skydiggers), Craig Northey (the Odds) and Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), this concert will take audiences from Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds to With a Little Help from My Friends, When I’m Sixty-Four, and more!
First appearing on the Art of Time Ensemble’s season in 2012 season, the group commissioned arrangements of Sgt. Pepper and subsequently released the show as an album in 2013. This time around, Art of Time teams up with the KWS to present the show in both Toronto and KW. Led by Artistic Director Andrew Burashko, Art of Time Ensemble fuses high art and popular culture in concerts that juxtapose the best of each genre.
“Sgt. Pepper is a really important album in the history of rock music because it’s one of the first recordings of rock and pop songs that used orchestral instruments,” commented Steven Page. “It’s also the first album of theirs that they didn’t tour, they didn’t play live. So it gives us the opportunity to explore those possibilities in a way that The Beatles never did.”
Sgt. Pepper runs January 22 & 23 at 8 pm at the Centre In the Square, 101 Queen St. N. in Kitchener. Tickets can be purchased online at kwsymphony.ca or by calling 519-745-4711 or 888-745-4717.
