The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony rings in 2016 with the uproarious Die Fledermaus, with guests from Wilfrid Laurier University and vocalists from across Canada and beyond. Led by KWS Music Director Edwin Outwater, this rollicking concert, full of deception, intrigue and glorious waltzes, can be seen on January 15 & 16 at 8 pm at Centre In The Square. In addition to the full KWS orchestra, guests from the WLU Alumni Choir, Laurier Singers and Opera Laurier Chorus take the stage with solo vocalists Jennifer Taverner, Bethany Horst, Kimberley Barber, Adam Luther, Joseph Schnurr, Benjamin Covey, Bradley Christensen and Tyler Fitzgerald. The evening will be hosted by performer Daniel Isengart and audiences will be delighted to see former City of Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr in the comic role of the jailor!
Die Fledermaus, an operetta by Johann Strauss II, premiered in New York in 1874 and has become an opera standard, performed all over the world and adapted many times for film and television. Centred around a party being thrown by Prince Orlofsky, deception and intrigue abound with mistaken identities and practical jokes causing confusion and hilarity amongst the characters. A concert version rather than one that is fully staged, this concert will be sung entirely in English, and audiences will be treated to a madcap story that can all be blamed on the champagne.
“Bringing opera back to the Centre in the Square has been a dream of mine for several years now,” commented Outwater. “I’m thrilled to finally make this happen, especially with an opera as beautiful, delightful and entertaining as Die Fledermaus. It wouldn’t have been possible without a fantastic collaboration with Wilfrid Laurier University and its fantastic musical resources. I hope all the opera lovers in KW will attend and support this first step in what I hope will be many operas to come!”
Tickets start at $19 and can be purchased from kwsymphony.ca or by calling 519-745-4711 or 888-475-4717.
