New numbers show how poorly the Conservatives have managed the immigration system
Recently, John McCallum, Liberal candidate for Markham—Thornhill, addressed the shocking decline in the number of people immigrating to Canada. New numbers released by Statistics Canada show that the Harper Conservatives cut the number of Canadians immigrating to Canada by over ten percent for the year ending June 2015.
“These numbers show just how poorly the Harper Conservatives have managed the immigration file,” said Mr. McCallum. “After reducing the number of family reunification applications to just 5,000 a year, Mr. Harper claimed that this reduction would be offset by growth in other types of immigration. It is clear now that the Conservatives have no plan for immigration, leaving countless Canadians waiting to be reunited with their parents, siblings and children.”
On Friday, the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, announced that a Liberal government will have family reunification at the very core of its immigration policy. In addition, a Liberal government will nearly double the budget for processing family class applications, a process that now takes over six years for parents and grandparents. Our plan will help reunite families and help grow the economy.
“The Harper Conservatives’ plan has failed Canadians,” said Mr. McCallum. “Only the Liberal Party has a plan to reunite families and build a country where everyone has a real and fair chance to succeed. By making the necessary investments, and by doubling the number of family reunification applications, we will create a better and fairer system for all Canadians.”
