2016 Luminato Festival runs June 10 to 19, marking Luminato’s 10th anniversary and fifth and final festival for Artistic Director Jorn Weisbrodt
Luminato Festival’s co-founder and chair, Tony Gagliano, CEO Anthony Sargent, and Artistic Director Jorn Weisbrodt, today announced that the 2016 festival will mark Weisbrodt’s fifth and final festival as Artistic Director. Artistic Director of Luminato Festival since 2012, Weisbrodt will program and lead the organization’s 10th anniversary Festival, running June 10 to 19, 2016, prior to relocating to New York City where he shares a home with his husband, Rufus Wainwright.
“I have been, and continue to be extremely grateful for the opportunity I have been given by the Luminato Festival team, the board, the donors, our artistic colleagues here in Toronto and across Canada, and the city itself in creating this Festival,” said Weisbrodt. “From day one, I’ve been welcomed extremely openly and enthusiastically and I consider some of the things we’ve done at Luminato to be the finest of my career. I feel it is time for me to move on after these five memorable years. I look forward to celebrating Luminato Festival’s 10th anniversary and five incredible years as Artistic Director next June.”
“On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to salute Jorn’s achievements and the significant contributions he has made to Luminato Festival’s longer-term development, giving us new partners and friends, a raised international profile, and so much more,” said Tony Gagliano, Luminato Festival co-founder and chair. “Jorn’s tireless work and unwavering vision for the past five years represents a renewed platform from which to enter our second decade. Though we are sad to see him go, we understand and support his decision to move on for both personal and professional reasons, and wish him the very best in future endeavours.”
Weisbrodt’s time as Artistic Director has been acclaimed for visionary programming statements, bringing to Toronto Robert Wilson and Philip Glass’s legendary opera Einstein on the Beach and the North American premiere of Wilson’s Life and Death of Marina Abramovic; the world premieres of Ronnie Burkett’s teeming performance event The Daisy Theatre and Kid Koala’s Nufonia Must Fall; Atom Egoyan’s unforgettable production of the Chinese opera Feng Yi Ting; Terence Koh’s Tomorrow’s Snow at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Pina Bausch’s masterpiece ; plus nights in honour of Kate McGarrigle and Joni Mitchell where the legendary singer performed with a band for the first time in over a decade; a celebration of the ground-breaking artist Matthew Barney; an all-male Broadway Love Duet evening and much more.
Highlights of the 2015 Luminato Festival under Weisbrodt’s direction included a reimagining of the immense Apocalypsis by R. Murray Schafer in a searing production by Lemi Ponifasio (his second Luminato project) with 1,000 performers on the stage of the Sony Centre; the marriage of the worlds of music and color guard in David Byrne’s Contemporary Color, and the Canadian debut of the Unsound Festival of electronic and experimental music, opening the doors of the vast Hearn Generating Station for a public cultural event for the first time.
“Jorn leaves the Festival having made a defining contribution not just to Luminato but to the cultural life of Canada. His endlessly inventive, visionary programming will long be remembered for its integrity and its communicative power, and Luminato and Toronto are blessed to have enjoyed these five years of Jorn’s artistic leadership of Ontario’s leading multi-arts festival. On a personal level I’m sad we’ve not had longer to work together, but I wish Jorn very warmly the best of fulfillment and success in the next stages of his already remarkable career, and am grateful for his consideration in making his decision known a full year in advance of his final festival,” said Luminato CEO Anthony Sargent.
Luminato Festival’s Board of Directors and CEO have launched an international search (led by Searchlight Canada) for an Artistic Director to take the Festival forward into its second decade, starting with the 2017 Luminato Festival. The 10th anniversary Luminato Festival runs June 10 to 19, 2016. Initial programming details will be announced in December 2015.
