Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) President Marcel Aubut has declared Canada Olympic Excellence Day a huge success. The event mobilised the top leaders of the Olympic Movement, almost three hundred Canadian and international Olympians, and tens of thousands who came to celebrate on the street.
The COC threw a big party for the official opening of the new Canadian Olympic House at 500 René-Lévesque West in downtown Montreal. The COC now has a main office in Canada’s first Olympic city. The House will be visible in the sky and on the street thanks to the Olympic Rings permanently installed on the roof and on the front of the building, the first such instance in accordance with the new rules IOC President Thomas Bach enacted.
The COC wants to enable the public to touch the Olympic dream by bringing the Rings within its reach. The emotional event was accompanied by video projection mapping reminiscent of the finer moments in Canada’s Olympic history.
Thousands descended upon René-Lévesque Blvd to meet the hundreds of Olympians present and get autographs. Kids took advantage of the sport demonstrations featured in the Future Olympians Festival presented by Provigo to try out Olympic sports and get advice from Olympians and other elite athletes. The party went on late into the night and ended with a live show presented by Pages Jaunes.
International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach traveled to Montreal for the first time since he won a gold medal in fencing at the 1976 Games. Mayor Denis Coderre made him an honorary citizen and gave him the keys to the city. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate by the Université de Montréal near the Olympic venue where he competed thirty nine years ago. He made an emotional visit to the site with his wife Claudia.
The new Canadian Olympic House will be home to the COC’s Montreal office. It will be the first time the COC will have a main office in the heart of the country’s first Olympic city, centralizing sports development and athlete services. There will also be a sport science and technology centre that will allow people to walk in the shoes of an athlete and engage in virtual recreations of various sports. The Lausanne Room is a multifunctional centre that will offer unlimited possibilities for holding events, such as television, radio and multimedia productions. It will become a major attraction of which all Montrealers will be proud.
