With more than 70 cultures showcasing their sights, sounds and tastes, a pan-global cultural experience awaits during the annual Carassauga Festival of Cultures.
When the three-day Carassauga Festival opens at venues across Mississauga on May 22nd, it will feature 28 pavilions hosting displays, presentations, entertainment, music, dancing, cuisine, games, fashion, art, theatre and film from various countries around the world. With a Carassauga passport in hand, visitors will be able to travel the world by going from pavilion to pavilion, enjoying interactive entertainment for people of all ages, special events for children and shopping in each pavilion offering different products representing the culture on display.
“Carassauga is a unique opportunity to experience cultural diversity without leaving the city,” says Linda Siutra, Executive Director of Carassauga. “It is a beautiful celebration of Canadian multiculturalism and appreciation of the different heritages that make our community strong.”
Special features of the 2015 Carassauga Festival include:
The Opening Night Ceremony (May 22nd, 7:30 p.m. at the Hershey SportZoneOutdoor Stage) is a kaleidoscope of colour and cultures encapsulated in the Parade of Nations. This celebration of all the countries represented at Carassauga launches the three-day festival.
The various Pavilion Stages — found throughout Mississauga — will offer non-stop cultural entertainment all weekend long.
Now in its fifth year, the Kids Zone is a child-friendly activity area that includes sports, music and fun activities for kids of all ages.
The delicious Toonie Taste experience will return this year, allowing visitors to sample a variety of dishes from different cultures around the world for only $2 each. This is in addition to the authentic full meal selections on offer from 72 different cultures.
The Carassauga Charity and Community Challenge is a unique opportunity to support various charities in the Mississauga community. Participants will complete a series of tasks at different pavilions throughout Carassauga — from trivia to participating in the entertainment to learning something new about the culture. During the three-day festival, all Festival passport holders will ride for free with MiWay — simply present your passport to help you get from pavilion to pavilion.
“It is our mission with Carassauga to provide people the chance to discover and enjoy the heritage and culture of their neighbours,” says Siutra. “It is all about promoting awareness, acceptance, appreciation and enjoyment of our multicultural community and building respect and co-operation among Canadians of all heritage.”
