-What the Chinese New Year Means to Me
Chinese New Year means more than just a celebration of the tradition from the last day of the last month in the Lunar calendar to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first month. To me, it is symbolized my origins and my past. As CBCs, Chinese born Canadians, this traditional celebration is a time to remember and commemorate our culture and values of honouring our ancestors, families, respect and compassion. It is a time for us to bond with our cultural community which is a part of who we are, carry on our values and share them with other communities.
Today, I feel truly grateful as a Chinese Canadian to be able to participate in Hubei Folk’s Gala celebrate my origins and cultural identity in a country like Canada. I feel so proud that our performance for the celebration earned a big applause by the audience. Let this remarkable day reminds us to never forget who we are. As we are taking this journey into 2015 and the future years ahead, let us never forget to bring our cultures into the multicultural societies around us and establish our global village into a community of diversity and respect.
We, Merit students from Merit Education, wish all Chinese Canadians a very happy and prosperous Year of the Ram!(By Annie Hsu)
