(The Prehistory of the ROM)

(The Art Gallery of Toronto)已在The Grange修建,多伦多的少部分贵族是收藏家与鉴赏家。 (Before there was a ROM, there were museum buildings and collections in Toronto. The Provincial Museum (you can see its facade on the Ryerson University campus) had three parts: archaeology, biology and fine art. At the University of Toronto, there were several collections: some of the colleges had museums, especially geology and mineralogy. There were plans to expand these. The Art Gallery of Toronto had recently been established in The Grange. A few wealthy Torontonians were collectors and connoisseurs. It took extraordinary vision, leadership, and common sense to weave the multiple strands together.)

(Charles Trick Currelly is appointed a collector for the University of Toronto at $500/year salary. He is working on excavations in Egypt and when back in Toronto, he arranges to display some of the material collected so that the people he is cultivating will be infected with enthusiasm and write cheques. He does not yet know whether he will be able to work at a college museum or whether plans for a big university museum will succeed. Meanwhile, he is learning to be a museum man.)

(A Royal Commission on the Future of the University recommends establishing a university museum. Sir Edmund Walker has had a concept in mind for at least 20 years. “Every year’s delay is a misfortune, not only to the education of the students…. but to the education and material welfare of the people of Ontario generally”.)
迁入(Moving In)

(Currelly moves into basement even before the roof is completed and begins to unpack material he has collected in Europe and Egypt.)
(Approval to Begin is Secured)

(Approval for cost-sharing between the University and the Government of Ontario means that construction can begin. Edmund Osler who is Chairman of the Conservative caucus twists the Premier’s arm by offering to cover costs himself. He becomes an original Board member and is a faithful donor.)

(The guards had to dust the displays before opening the museums. Some of the men did double duty because they were skilled glaziers and fine carpenters. All we know of Miss Hand was that she wrote a letter asking to be allowed a lunch break. I am grateful to whoever had the idea of recording this group for posterity.)
