美国疾病控制和预防中心称，美国爆发的大肠杆菌疫情与有机胡萝卜有关，至今造成一人死亡，39例病例，包括15人须留院治理。该中心表示，该批胡萝卜相信已不再在商店货架上，但可能还在消费者家中，它们应该被扔掉。加拿大食品检验局(Canadian Food Inspection Agency, CFIA)建议，消费者应核对召回通知内列出的品牌、产品名称和尺寸、UPC和代码，以确认家中产品是否在名单上。
受O121型大肠杆菌污染的食物，外观或味道并没有异常，但仍会让人生病。上个月，美国麦当劳的汉堡包怀疑受大肠杆菌污染，公司亦于12个州将该种汉堡包下架。症状包括恶心、呕吐、轻度到严重腹部绞痛以及水样或血样腹泻。在严重病例中，病人可能会癫痫发作或中风，需要输血和肾透析，或者肾脏永久受损。重症者可以致命。
