MPP Babikian calls for Memorial Honoring Tendercare Living Centre Seniors
Scarborough-Agincourt, Dec. 28 – MPP Aris Babikian today stated his support and deepest sympathy to the residents, families and staff coping with the tragic Covid outbreak at Tendercare Living Centre.
“I am deeply troubled with the situation at Tendercare Living Centre,” said MPP Babikian. “I have visited Tendercare on so many occasions to celebrate with the residents their birthdays and various festivities. This crisis has touched me personally. I know so many residents and staff at Tendercare who I see as friends who are also deeply affected by the outbreak. It hurts me to see our most vulnerable and their families go through this disaster. I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and the loved ones of the 43 victims of this tragedy,” MPP Babikian said.
MPP Babikian also committed to working with the families, residents and staff of the centre to create a permanent memorial once the Covid crisis is behind the province.
And he thanked centre’s staff and the staff of the Scarborough Health Network who have worked tirelessly at the home since the beginning of the outbreak and have sent infection control specialists, palliative care and geriatric workers, doctors, nurses, oxygen tanks, PPE, and other vital resources to the facility.
“Our front-line health care and long-term care staff continue to be real heroes,” Babikian said. “We owe them so much for their tireless efforts during this crisis.”
From the first day of the tragedy, MPP Babikian has been in daily contact with the Minister of Long-Term Care and her staff, the Scarborough Health Network (SHN), the families of the residents at Tendercare, and the doctors who were in the facility to care of the residents.
MPP Babikian praised the Minister of Long-Term Care, the Hon. Merrilee Fullerton for the work she and her ministry have done throughout the pandemic to provide supports to the sector. Staffing needs at Tendercare are being met with agency staff, he said, and North York General Hospital has entered into a Voluntary Management Contract to take over temporary management of the home. This agreement allows the hospital to provide enhanced support to residents. The hospital is also working to improve communication with families. In addition, the ministry has completed an inspection of the home. The report can be accessed at:

MPP Babikian remains committed to doing everything he can, along with the Ministry and our partners, to help return the facilities to their normal operations.
In the next few days, MPP Babikian will launch consultations with families and other stakeholders to discuss plans for a memorial.
Aris is grateful for the all work and support that the teams from the Local Public Health Unit, the Local Health Integration Network, Scarborough Health Network, North York General Hospital and others for providing and have provided to the home.
