The Julian Taylor Band’s star is rising after recently performing a free concert for Canada’s Walk of Fame Festival at Dundas Square and a high-profile performance on the West Main Stage at the esteemed Toronto festival TURF. Now they’re stoked to announce an upcoming headlining concert at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern on November 28th. To top it off, the band will release the first EP of four, from the new double LP Desert Star (Aporia Records), on Friday, October 23rd.
Already receiving national, commercial and CBC radio airplay and acclaim for the single “Just a Little Bit” – which has been included on the Blue Jays’ stadium playlist – the five-song EP is the fall edition of the four seasons series. The idea for the band’s sophomore double album is to have an EP released every quarter-year until completion. The EPs will stand alone as individual projects, but they are intended to contribute to one greater idea: that if a single flower can grow in a desert, anything can.
On this collection of late ‘60s and ‘70s-style soul/rock songs, you’ll find more than enough hooky choruses and dynamic arrangements all harnessed by Julian Taylor’s distinctive vocal prowess. The album begins with the request for “just a little bit more” in an upbeat, catchy and motivational song – which has already been picked up in a BWCC Haute Route Alps cycling group’s fan video https://vimeo.com/140503484 – then ends with “too much of everything” in the track “Desert Star (Who Could Ask For anything More).”
“Just a Little Bit” moves from a Gnarls Barkley solo bass lick to a tremendous choral crescendo, with meaty horns and a Caribbean flavour throughout, while “Bobbi Champagne” – a serious cork-popper – blends rock and soul seamlessly, with hints of Prince igniting the fiery melody and guitar solos. In fact, JTB is that rare bridge between rock and soul, in company with the likes of Prince, Lenny Kravitz and Terence Trent D’Arby.
“Heard Good Things” – which has also been garnering much airplay since its release in late September – is a straight-up ‘70s rock anthem with more Kravitz/Hendrix wailing guitar, plus an intro lick that pays homage to Julian’s Mohawk ancestry. The band keeps it all nicely balanced with a sweet lullabye, aptly named “Say Goodnight,” that is reminiscent at times, of the Guess Who’s hit “These Eyes,” and really showcases their mastery at dynamics and deft ability to build a song to a satisfying peak.
The ending track “Desert Star (Who Could Ask For Anything More)” continues with more of that real ‘70s Canadian vibe that brings to mind The Stampeders’ “Sweet City Woman,” or songs by Trooper and Edward Bear, but with the unique JTB stamp all over it.
This solid offering from JTB is flanked by Julian’s amazingly strong and versatile vocals and frankly, who could ask for anything more? Stay tuned though, because they will definitely bring it, with three more EPs to come.
