The star of Montreal 1976 and nine-time Olympic medallist, Nadia Comăneci, visited the gymnastics training centre at the National Sport Institute of Quebec in Montreal. The former Romanian gymnast was accompanied by her husband, former gymnast and two-time gold medallist from Los Angeles 1984, Bart Conner, and Olympic bronze medallist in diving from Atlanta 1996, Annie Pelletier. They met athletes and coaches.
Ms Comăneci inspired millions of young girls to enter gymnastics after she earned a perfect ten at the Montreal Games and earned five medals at the tender age of fourteen. Not only did she inspire many other young athletes to set their aim on the Olympic Games, including Canadian diver Annie Pelletier, Nadia also met her husband Bart Conner in Montreal in 1976, when they were both competing at the first Olympic Games.
The three medallists will join over 200 other Olympians at Canada Olympic Excellence Day. The Canadian Olympic Committee is hosting a big bash for the official opening of Canadian Olympic House. People of all ages are invited to attend. As of 6 p.m., over 200 Olympians will meet their fans and sign autographs. Families are invited to take part in the Future Olympians Festival presented by Provigo where elite athletes will introduce kids to their sports, including boxing, gymnastics, fencing, mogul skiing, hockey and beach volleyball. There will also be face painting and other activities for kids. Team Canada mascot Komak will host his friends PACHI from the TORONTO 2015 Pan American Games and Vinicius from Rio 2016.
Rio de Janeiro will be celebrated as the host city of the next Summer Olympic Games in 2016. Percussionists from Samajam will set the tone with their Brazilian rhythms around 8:30 p.m. and will invite attendees to join in. They will be accompanied by dancers dressed in Brazilian colors.
At nightfall, Cirque du Soleil acrobats will lead us into the highlight of the evening: the raising of the Olympic Rings to the roof of the building. It will be the first time they are permanently installed in accordance to the new rules that govern them. Video projections will add to the spectacle, along with an original score composed by famed film composer Alain Mayrand.
Gregory Charles will conduct the orchestra that will perform his music. As of 10 p.m, Gregory Charles will take the stage with other artists for a live concert presented by Yellow Pages. The lineup includes Andee, Brigitte Boisjoli, Jean-François Breau, Marie-Ève Janvier, Sylvain Cossette, Roch Voisine and Alex Nevsky.
The new Canadian Olympic House will be home to the COC’s Montreal office. It will be the first time the COC will have a main office in the heart of the country’s first Olympic city, centralizing sports development and athlete services. There will also be a sport science and technology centre that will allow people to walk in the shoes of an athlete and engage in virtual recreations of various sports. The Lausanne Room is a multifunctional centre that will offer unlimited possibilities for holding events, such as television, radio and multimedia productions. It will become a major attraction of which all Montrealers will be proud.
